Transition Areas (TA's)

Transition Areas (TAs)

Transition areas (T As)

The round is normally divided into three sections with two key transition areas en route. A contender would complete a section on the hill, aided by a support team of their choice, to facilitate load carrying, navigation, eating and drinking, plus keeping motivation and spirits high.
Transition areas (T As)
The two main T A's listed below are the most popular and easy to access of the many support points that a contender or support persons could select, additionally they provide support at approx.1/3 and 2/3's of the challenge irrespective of direction of travel. Getting to and from many of the additional support points would be based on round familiarity, local knowledge, plus in many cases the extra support persons that would be required to fulfill these extra roles.

Loch Eilde Mor

Situated at the west side of Loch Eilde Mor, it can be accessed from the B863 at Kinlochleven from the road leading to the Mamore Lodge Hotel. At the hotel you can leave your car and continue on foot using the well-defined track leading to the lochan.

This location is ideal for contenders coming off the Mamore’s before following the track and valley section leading to Loch Treig traveling anticlockwise, or vice versa traveling clockwise.

Please be aware that the Mamore Lodge is now closed and that a gate is now located at the bottom of the hill leading to it. This gate may be locked at times, restricting access to or exit from the lodge car park. Support teams should be mindful that this restriction will necessitate car parking at the foot of the hill and an additional 2k walk/run/cycle to the lodge car park, followed by the walk run cycle to the T A.

Additional support options

Mountain Bike

Mountain Bike

The use of the mountain bike has recently proved popular with support teams getting into key rendezvous locations at agreed times to refuel, restock or pacer change over as required.

Train Services

Train Services

The use of the train has also been used to facilitate support options. For example a train from Fort William to Corrour followed by a few kilometres walk jog or cycle to the south side of Loch Treig,

refuelling stop

This provides an excellent changeover point or refuelling stop, prior to the ascent or following the descent of Beinn na Lap, depending on direction choice (clockwise/anticlockwise)

Corrour Station House

Corrour Station House

Provides excellent eating facilities and accommodation. However due to the remoteness of this location, pre-booking is highly recommended. Retiring pacers and support team can either return to Glen Nevis youth Hostel via a long Westbound trek to Glen Nevis or by train, from Corrour to Fort William, train timetable permitting.
